Often the napkin is unceremoniously placed on top or to the left of the plate. this is an effective approach- if the intent is to downplay the visual impact of the napkin, in order to heighten more subtle or important elements in the tablescape.
On the other hand, the napkin can also be a valuable tool to underscore the theme or mood of the evening. For instance the opulent Christmas table demands an equally opulent place setting, hence the napkin is folded to echo the shape of the tablescape's center piece- the Christmas tree.
The whimsical napkin 'rose' gains prominance-both in stature and height when inserted into a cone formed from a leaf, and anchored in a bud vase. And much like any large, fresh bloom, it commands center stage attention at the table.
Although originally developed for an Easter tablescape, the napkin bird found yet another application. Here it substitutes for the Dove- a traditional symbol for the Jewish New Year.
